Beyond the Frame: Photo exhibition presents voices from the hills

Dhaka, 15 September 2026: Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF) organised a photo exhibition titled “Rising Hills, Beyond the Frame: A Photo Voice” at the National Chitrashala, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Dhaka, on Tuesday.

The exhibition presented visual stories from the Partnership for Resilient Livelihoods in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (PRLC) project, capturing the everyday lives, work, struggles and aspirations of communities in Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Bandarban. This project is funded by European Union and implemented by MJF through nine local partner organisations.

H.E. Michael Miller, Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the European Union to Bangladesh, said the photographs showed what project documents often cannot capture. He said the images reflected people gaining greater choices, women and men developing sustainable sources of income, families strengthening their wellbeing, and communities becoming more aware of their rights.

He said the European Union views development cooperation as a way to create conditions in which people can improve their own lives and shape their own futures through stronger capacities, better opportunities and local institutions that respond to people’s needs.

Dr Mohammad Zakaria, Director General of the NGO Affairs Bureau, said the PRLC project goes beyond conventional poverty reduction by helping vulnerable families build sustainable, climate-smart livelihoods. He said women are at the centre of this change, with expanded economic opportunities and stronger roles in decision-making.

Stephen Rodrigues, Resident Representative of UNDP, said stories are a deeply human way of building connection, and the photographs powerfully present the lives, culture, aspirations and hopes of people in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

Speaking on behalf of the Nagorikata Civic Engagement Fund, Katharina König said photographs can serve as a strong medium for storytelling, civic engagement and representation, particularly for marginalised communities.

Geetanjali Singh, Country Representative of UN Women, congratulated MJF, the European Union and UNDP for the initiative, saying it offers important learning on livelihoods and integrated development. She also appreciated the focus on young women and leadership.

Speaking at the event, Shaheen Anam, Executive Director of MJF, said the EU-funded PRLC project, implemented with nine local organisations, aimed to support 20,000 households to move out of extreme poverty by improving health, nutrition and livelihoods.

She said, MJF’s rights-based approach goes beyond economic support and also focuses on protecting rights and ensuring access to justice when violations occur. Shaheen Anam also urged the government to prioritise the unimplemented clauses of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Treaty so that local communities can rebuild trust and contribute fully to the region and the country.

Nirupa Dewan, governing board member of MJF delivered the vote of thanks at the event where over 65 photographs were displayed. The exhibition is open for all till September 16 (5PM). Two cases story publications and a photo catalogue were unveiled at the event.

ছবিতে পাহাড়ের মানুষের জীবন ও সংগ্রামের গল্প

ঢাকা, ১৫ সেপ্টেম্বর ২০২৬: পার্বত্য চট্টগ্রাম অঞ্চলের মানুষের জীবন, কাজ, সংগ্রাম ও আশার গল্প নিয়ে মানুষের জন্য ফাউন্ডেশন (এমজেএফ) আয়োজন করেছে আলোকচিত্র প্রদর্শনী “Rising Hills, Beyond the Frame: A Photo Voice”। মঙ্গলবার ঢাকার বাংলাদেশ শিল্পকলা একাডেমির জাতীয় চিত্রশালায় ৫ নং গ্যালারিতে এ প্রদর্শনীর আয়োজন করা হয়।

প্রদর্শনীতে Partnership for Resilient Livelihoods in Chittagong Hill Tracts (PRLC) প্রকল্পের আওতায় রাঙামাটি, খাগড়াছড়ি ও বান্দরবানের জনগোষ্ঠীর দৈনন্দিন জীবন, জীবিকা, অধিকার ও পরিবর্তনের গল্প তুলে ধরা হয়। ইউরোপীয় ইউনিয়নের অর্থায়নে প্রকল্পটি এমজেএফ নয়টি স্থানীয় সহযোগী সংগঠনের মাধ্যমে বাস্তবায়ন করছে।

অনুষ্ঠানে বাংলাদেশে নিযুক্ত ইউরোপীয় ইউনিয়নের রাষ্ট্রদূত ও হেড অব ডেলিগেশন মাইকেল মিলার বলেন, এসব ছবি প্রকল্পের কাগজপত্রের বাইরে মানুষের বাস্তব পরিবর্তনের গল্প দেখায়। এখানে মানুষ নতুন সুযোগ পাচ্ছে, নারী ও পুরুষ টেকসই আয়ের পথ তৈরি করছে, পরিবারগুলো তাদের জীবনমান উন্নত করছে এবং কমিউনিটিগুলো নিজেদের অধিকার সম্পর্কে আরও সচেতন হচ্ছে।

তিনি আরও বলেন, ইউরোপীয় ইউনিয়নের কাছে উন্নয়ন সহযোগিতার অর্থ হলো এমন পরিবেশ তৈরি করা, যেখানে মানুষ নিজেদের জীবন উন্নত করতে পারে এবং নিজেদের ভবিষ্যৎ নিজেই গড়ে নিতে পারে।

এনজিও বিষয়ক ব্যুরোর মহাপরিচালক ড. মোহাম্মদ জকরিয়া বলেন, পিআরএলসি প্রকল্পটি শুধু দারিদ্র্য কমানোর কাজ নয়; এটি ঝুঁকিতে থাকা পরিবারগুলোকে টেকসই ও জলবায়ু সহনশীল জীবিকা গড়ে তুলতে সহায়তা করছে। তিনি বলেন, এই পরিবর্তনের কেন্দ্রে রয়েছেন নারীরা, যারা আয়মূলক কাজ ও সিদ্ধান্ত গ্রহণে আরও সক্রিয় ভূমিকা রাখছেন।

ইউএনডিপির আবাসিক প্রতিনিধি স্টিভেন রড্রিগেস বলেন, গল্প মানুষকে মানুষের সঙ্গে যুক্ত করে। এই ছবিগুলো পার্বত্য চট্টগ্রাম অঞ্চলের মানুষের জীবন, সংস্কৃতি, আকাঙ্ক্ষা ও আশার কথা শক্তভাবে তুলে ধরেছে।

নাগরিকতা সিভিক এনগেজমেন্ট ফান্ডের পক্ষ থেকে ক্যাথারিনা কুনিগ বলেন, ছবি গল্প বলার একটি শক্তিশালী মাধ্যম। বিশেষ করে প্রান্তিক জনগোষ্ঠীর কণ্ঠ, অংশগ্রহণ ও প্রতিনিধিত্ব তুলে ধরতে এ ধরনের আলোকচিত্র গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা রাখতে পারে।

গীতাঞ্জলি সিং, ইউএন উইমেনের কান্ট্রি রিপ্রেজেন্টেটিভ বলেন, এমজেএফ, ইউরোপীয় ইউনিয়ন ও ইউএনডিপিকে এ উদ্যোগের জন্য অভিনন্দন জানান। তিনি বলেন, জীবিকা, সমন্বিত উন্নয়ন এবং তরুণ নারীদের নেতৃত্ব নিয়ে কাজ করার ক্ষেত্রে এই উদ্যোগ থেকে শেখার সুযোগ আছে।

মানুষের জন্য ফাউন্ডেশনের নির্বাহী পরিচালক শাহীন আনাম বলেন, স্বাস্থ্য, পুষ্টি ও জীবিকার উন্নয়নের মাধ্যমে ২০ হাজার পরিবারকে চরম দারিদ্র্য থেকে বের করে আনার লক্ষ্য নিয়ে এ প্রকল্প কাজ করছে। এমজেএফের অধিকারভিত্তিক কাজ শুধু অর্থনৈতিক সহায়তায় সীমাবদ্ধ নয়; অধিকার সুরক্ষা এবং অধিকার লঙ্ঘনের ঘটনায় ন্যায়বিচারে প্রবেশাধিকার নিশ্চিত করাও এর অংশ।

শাহীন আনাম পার্বত্য চট্টগ্রাম শান্তি চুক্তির অমীমাংসিত ধারাগুলো বাস্তবায়নে সরকারের অগ্রাধিকার দেওয়ার আহ্বান জানান, যাতে স্থানীয় জনগোষ্ঠী আস্থা পুনর্গঠন করে অঞ্চল ও দেশের উন্নয়নে আরও সক্রিয়ভাবে ভূমিকা রাখতে পারে।

অনুষ্ঠানে এমজেএফের গভর্নিং বোর্ড সদস্য নিরূপা দেওয়ান ধন্যবাদ জ্ঞাপন করেন। প্রদর্শনীতে ৬৫টির বেশি আলোকচিত্র প্রদর্শিত হয়। প্রদর্শনীটি ১৬ সেপ্টেম্বর বিকেল ৫টা পর্যন্ত সবার জন্য উন্মুক্ত থাকবে। অনুষ্ঠানে দুটি কেস স্টোরি প্রকাশনা এবং একটি ফটো ক্যাটালগ উন্মোচন করা হয়।
