Ensure Security of Girls in Schools

Press Release

‘Ensure Security of Girls in Schools

Manusher Jonno foundation (MJF) has expressed deep concern at the lack of security and safety of girls in Educational Institutions.

In the context of recent allegation of rape of a class 7 student in Khagrachhari, MJF’s Executive Director Shaheen Anam said, ‘Girls are vulnerable to sexual harassment and abuse in their schools and authorities have not taken enough measures to protect them. Such incidents are reported regularly and seldom are perpetrators brought to book. Fearing reprisals girls suffer in silence as there is no safe space for them to express their torment.’

According to the news published in various newspapers, the teacher was accused of rape attempt of a 10th grader in February 2024 and was jailed for it.  After release he was posted to the same school in spite of protests from local people. He was accused of the same crime at his previous job in Kushtia in 2018.

MJF questions the logic of recruiting a teacher in a girls school with a track record of sexual misconduct and why instead of being dismissed he was reinstated. The ongoing investigation must look into these factors.

However, Shaheen Anam also condemned the incident of beating the accused teacher to death instead of punishing him according to law.

She demands that the recruitment process for hiring male teachers in a girl’s school be reviewed and a system of referral checking made mandatory.  She also demands implementation of the High Court directive on sexual harassment across all education institutions and enactment of a law on prevention of sexual harassment making it a crime punishable by law.
